Elsevier Spain SLU is committed to maintaining your confidence regarding the privacy of personal information we obtain on you. Please read this Privacy Policy carefully in order that you understand our practice when it comes to recording, using and sharing your personal information.

About our Privacy Policy

This privacy policy describes how the company Elsevier Spain, SLU ("Elsevier", "us", "our") will use personal information it records when you visit Elsevier web pages, application forms or questionnaires, or Elsevier apps or products which publish a link to this privacy policy (the "Service"). This policy may be supplemented with additional conditions or notifications regarding privacy with regard to certain areas of the Service.

Information we record

The Service collects your personal information in two ways: directly from the information you provide and, automatically, through the technology of the Service itself.

Information you provide

The personal information that the Service records directly from you may include the following:

* Contact details such as your name, email address, postal address and phone number;
* Information on your educational and professional background;

In order to access certain content and use the additional features and characteristics of the Service, please open an account and fill out and submit the registration form, which may request additional information from you.

If you choose to register and log on with another account (e.g. your Facebook account) the authentication of your username will be processed by this third company and the Service will record your name, email address and any other information on that other account which you give us permission to share. This will be activated when you give us permission to link your account for the Service to your other account.

Information collected automatically

Through our servers and the use of cookies (small text files that are sent to your computer), invisible pixels (.gifs) and other technologies, the service automatically records information that tells us how you use the Service, for example:

* The Internet Protocol address used to connect your computer to the Internet;
* Information on your computer, the device and the connection information e.g. browser type and version, operating system, mobile platform, single device identifier and other technical identifiers;
* The information on the use of the Uniform Resource Locator ("URL"), which includes the date and time, the referral URL and output URL and the search terms you have used, and the pages you have visited or searched in the service; and
* In the case of location-aware services, the physical location of your device in order to provide you with the most suitable information for your current location.

For any purpose, unless this is restricted by law, we may also use and disclose information that does not reveal your identity and which does not establish a direct association with any specific individual, e.g. information about the device and browser, as well as overall data and anonymous information on overall usage. If we combine personal information with non-personal, the resulting information will be treated as personal information for as long as these remain combined.

You can exercise control over cookies through browser settings and other tools. However, if you block certain cookies, you may not be able to register, log on to the Service, access certain parts of the Service, or make full use of it.

Using your information

We may use your personal information in order to:

* Provide you with the Service, that is, allow you to access our products or services, or their delivery, process or complete an order or transaction, or conduct surveys or promotional programmes;

We may sometimes combine personal information you have provided along with information we obtain from other sources, or which already figures in our records. This information has been collected over the Internet or by some other method, or by predecessor companies or their associates, for the purposes described above.

Communication and access to your information

For the purposes described above your personal information can be processed by other bodies such as:
* Agents, representatives, relevant joint ventures and organisations for which we act as agent, licensee or editor, such as companies and sponsors;
* Suppliers and service providers applicable, including: publishers, reviewers, credit card processors, personnel responsible for customer service, service providers, mail, mailing companies, transport operators and IT service providers; and

To assist us with the production and delivery of our products and services, the development and operation of our businesses, systems and applications, as well as payment processing, customer service, promotion, marketing and communication, and any other purpose stipulated in this privacy policy.

Also your details will be used for mailings on events, products, publications, services, courses and special offers, special promotions and documentation of various kinds of organisations in the following sectors: medical healthcare, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, finance and insurance. This will be undertaken using different media (including electronic and email or SMS). In this last case, the information will be sent by Elsevier, forwarding only information about services or products which, due to your profile, are best suited to your characteristics and /or needs. We are not responsible for the content, advertising, products or other materials that are provided by these third parties.

If the service offers a content database or training service ("Subscription Service") and you access the subscription service through a subscription sponsored by an institution, your personal information and certain data on usage, recorded through the subscription service, may be communicated to your institution for the purpose of usage analysis, subscription management, course management, testing and support. This could include: the number of items you have downloaded, items not subscribed to which you have accessed, and test results. If your institution is a corporation or other business organisation, for the purposes of cost allocation and departmental budget drafts, additional usage information may also be communicated, such as: the types of records you have visited and the number of searches you have made.

We may also need to communicate your personal information:

* To observe any law, regulation, subpoena, court order or other legal obligation;
* To enforce and protect our rights and property;
* To detect, investigate and help prevent security threats, fraud or other malicious practices;
* To protect the rights, property or safety of our users, employees or other persons; and
* If Elsevier, the Service or a related asset or line of business is acquired, transferred or merged with another company.

The Service can allow you to post and share personal information, comments, materials and other content. Any information you disclose publicly could be collected and used by others and may be indexed by search engines, so that this cannot be deleted. Please exercise caution when disclosing personal information in these public areas.

Your choices and preferences for communication and advertising

You can manage your communication preferences and advertising when you register for the Service by updating the preference settings for your account, using the opt-out option or unsubscribing, or by another method provided in the communications received by us, or by contacting us. We reserve the right to notify you of changes or updates that occur in the service whenever necessary.

Accessing, accuracy and updating your information

The Service can allow registered users to access account information and make corrections or updates whenever you log on. The accuracy and updating of this information is the sole responsibility of the user. You can also request access to any of your personal information that the Service may have. To protect your privacy and security, we may require you to verify your identity. If you request that your account be deactivated or your personal information deleted, we will endeavour to meet your request but it is possible that some personal information may remain in backup copies for a certain period of time and may be kept as necessary for legitimate business purposes or due to our legal obligations.

Data security

Elsevier takes steps to protect your personal information from loss, theft, misuse and unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration and destruction, through the use of appropriate administrative, physical and technical safeguards.

International movement of information

Your personal information may be transferred to third countries for processing. By using the Service, you authorise the transfer of information to countries outside your country of residence, where it is possible that the legislation observed on non-personal data protection may be different.
